The unavoidable “Brexit” debate, on the possible impact of staying or leaving the EU, prior to the June referendum, dominates the news. At eXactitude we have been watching with interest. This highly complicated and emotive decision, with the ramifications of exit or entry very unclear, pleasingly seems to not be affecting recruitment in the finance sector across our core region of Hampshire and surrounding counties.
C&I: The FC market is our busiest in C&I, with a particularly strong mid-market demand in the £45-70k base salary range. Quality qualified accountants are becoming scarcer in this marketplace and eXactitude’s long standing network has been, over the last 6 months in particular, filling far more vacancies than relying on a specialist job board adverts. Our experience in looking at motivators, competencies and past behaviour for candidates, adds extra value to the hiring process. We pride ourselves in attaining a long term fit for both the client and the candidate.
The FD market has been steady at the start of 2016 with a number of clients looking to change their financial leadership due to new funding (PE or MBO) or the execution of a revised business plan. Again, as with the FC market many clients are very focused on their own industry sector, but quality FD’s are managing to find new work normally within a 3-6 month search window if they are flexible on salary and location. In this region the typical SME FD base salary sits in the £70-130k range with a lot of SME directors earning £75-95k + benefits. Many FDs if they are immediately available start work on an interim basis and once they have proved their aptitude and cultural fit are hired onto the payroll. A “try before you buy” approach that can benefit both parties.
Newly/recently Qualified ACA’s are still much in demand, particularly in the larger corporate sector where both internal audit and group accountancy work requires a steady replenishment, as previous hires move onto more commercial FM and FC roles either internally or externally. eXactitude often advise that if an ACA does ultimately want a career in C&I (they don’t want to stay in middle management or progress to partnership in practice) that they think hard about moving within one or two years after qualifying, as there are a lot more opportunities than when 3yrs PQE+. Salaries range from smaller Practice ACA’s at £35k up to Top 6 ACA’s attaining £43-48k in the north of our region.
Newly/Recently Qualified CIMA/ACCA are still in a great position with the choice of moving within or into the corporate world or trying to find a position in an SME. A bit of careful strategic thought regarding this can make future career moves easier, although it is not impossible to move from a corporate to an SME or vice-versa but it does become increasingly difficult as extra PQE and salary is added over time. Salaries are similar to the ACA range above.
PRACTICE & TAX: The end of 2015 and Q1 in 2016 has been a very positive time for accountancy practices across Hampshire and surrounding towns. They have seen increased client activity and lots of new business enquiries which has resulted in a strong demand for experienced staff at all levels. This is set to continue with firms taking positive action to attract high calibre staff for both current and future anticipated needs, including Partner/Director succession planning.
